Best time to travel

There can be snow in the higher parts of the mountain on Corsica until the end of June. July and August can be very hot; they also are the busiest months (every year around 10.000 people walk the GR20). June and September seem the best months, also because it's not that hot. Most cabins are open from June through September.

Grande Randonnée 20

The GR20 crosses the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse, for the largest part at an altitude between 1000 and 2000 meters. Even though it's a hiking trail, it's a real mountain route: tough, nowhere level and with hard parts. Add to that the fact that you have to bring food and water for several days and often also tents, because you can't book cabins in advance. Next to the cabins are camping sites. It is a route that requires a good physical condition and experience. It should not be done unprepared.

The GR20 has a northern part (between Calenzana and Vizzavona) and a southern part (between Vizzavona and Conca). Vizzavona has a train station and can be reached from Bastia or Ajaccio, which makes it possible to walk the route in two parts. The complete route (200 km) takes at least two weeks, not counting days of rest.

The northern part of the GR20 is harder and technically more demanding than the southern part.
