Visa

You don't need a visa to visit Mexico, but your passport should be valid until at least 6 months after your arrival.

Health

For up to date information, look at the web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Also always consult your family doctor and the web site of your country's Foreign Department.

Money

If you know in advance which places you're going to visit, you can find out online if and where there are ATM's where you can use your MasterCard and Cirrus or Visa to withdraw money.

Climate and best time to visit

May-June is a good time to visit Mexico, because the temperature is not too hot. Agua Azul is supposed to be clearer in July-August.

Yucatan has a tropical climate. The temperature sometimes reaches 40 degrees Centigrade. The average temperature during the daytime is 25-30 degrees. The dry season is from October to May and the rain season from May to October. Even during the dry season there can be short but intense showers, often in the afternoon.

Public transportation

Public transportation in Mexico is well organized. It is possible to travel around the country by bus. The best thing to do is to get bus tickets one day ahead at the bus station. Your luggage is kept in the lower compartment of the bus and almost always you get a receipt. Of course you need to keep an eye on your luggage, because theft is supposed to be a common event.

Accomodation

Early in the season it is easy to find hotel rooms. We always looked for budget hotels that were marked as reasonably good in our travel books and they always were. A lot of this kind of hotels has a courtyard, which tends to lead to noise.

Safety and security

Traveling in some countries brings risks with it. That should not always be reason not to go, but part of your preparation should be to find out what the risks are, if any. Take a look at the web site of the CIA Factbook
