General information

Norway is beautiful, but rather expensive. Especially alcoholic beverages are twice as expensive as in other parts of Europe.

The speed limits in towns and cities is 50 k/p/h, on provincial roads 80 k/p/h and on some highways 90 k/p/h. The speed limit for cars with trailers is 70 k/p/h, for trailers without seperate brakes 60 k/p/h. Mind the speed limits, because the fines for speeding are steep.

There are some toll roads, usually not the highways. This is done manually, one has to fill out a form at a toll booth; keep the receipt, it's possible that you'll be stopped to check if you've paid toll.

Drinking and driving is even less advisable than elsewhere; the fine for a higher permillage than 0.5 is higher than a median monthly salary; if you're caught with a higher permillage than 1.5, your driving license will be revoked and you'll go to jail, even without having caused an accident!

Climate and best time to travel

In the summer, main roads in Norway are accessible, but there are roads that are still closed in June because of the snow.

The best time for touring the south of Norway, temperature-wise, is July through August. The temperatures in Oslo are comparable to those in Britain, but farther north, especially in the mountains, it is colder. The amount of rainy days is the same throughout the year.

Money

In Norway you'll find ATMs virtually everywhere.

If you know in advance which places you're going to visit, you can find out online if and where there are ATM's where you can use your MasterCard and Cirrus or Visa to withdraw money.

There are many camping sites in Norway. To make sure that there is room, it's best to make reservations in advance.
